We've added a new How it works section to the Zego Sense app. It gives you a clear breakdown of how we track your trips, rate your driving, and reward you for driving safely, all in one place.
How to find it
Open the Zego Sense app.
On your home screen, find the driver rating card at the top.
Tap the three-dot menu (⋯) in the bottom-right corner of the card.
Tap How it works.
Trip detection
Your phone's built-in sensors recognise unique patterns for different forms of transport. This allows us to remove trips when it's not you driving, so your driver rating stays fair and accurate.
Here's what the app can detect:
Walking: A steady, regular rhythm picked up by your phone's motion sensors.
Cycling: Repetitive peaks from pedalling create a distinctive pattern.
Train: Smooth, continuous motion without the stops and starts of driving.
Driving: A varied pattern with stops, starts, acceleration, and braking.
Only your actual driving trips count towards your driver rating. If you're on a bus, train, or bike, those trips won't affect it.
Over time, the app also builds a pattern of your driving, like a fingerprint. This helps us keep your rating as accurate as possible.

If you think a trip has been included in your driver rating that you didn't make, you can let us know directly from the How it works screen in the app or by checking our article on how to report passenger trips.
Our driver rating levels
Your driver rating reflects your driving over time. There are five levels:
Level | What it means |
Excellent | Exceptional driving — well done! |
Great | Strong, consistent driving — nice work. |
Good | Steady driving — keep it up. |
Needs improving | Nearly there — small changes can help. |
At risk | Must drive safer to keep your cover. |
The higher your driver rating, the more you can benefit at renewal.
Your good driving, rewarded
Good drivers deserve better. We reward good driving with real savings and rewards.
Earning and redeeming points
You earn points as you drive safely. Track your progress on the home screen under Rewards > Progress. As a guide, 500 points = £5.
Tap Rewards > Discover to browse available gift cards from popular brands like Nike, Just Eat, Tesco, and Amazon. Once you've earned enough points, redeem them for the gift card of your choice.
Savings at renewal
Your driver rating plays a direct role at renewal time. The better you drive, the more you could save on your next policy. Good driving leads to a better price — it's that simple.
