How do I prevent passenger trips from affecting my driver rating?

Updated this week

The Zego Sense app uses your smartphone's sensors to get to know your driving behaviours and movements over time. This means that it will quickly learn the difference between when you’re driving and when you’re a passenger on a bus or a train (which do not count towards your driver rating).

However, there may be occasions where it's difficult to distinguish when you are driving in your insured vehicle and when you are travelling as a passenger in someone else's vehicle.

To help with this, it's best to make sure your phone is connected to your vehicle’s Bluetooth whenever you're driving. This connection allows the Sense app to more accurately detect whether you are behind the wheel, ensuring that your driver rating reflects your own driving habits — not someone else’s.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Open your phone’s Bluetooth settings.

  2. Pair your phone with your vehicle's Bluetooth system.

  3. Make sure Bluetooth stays turned on when driving.

  4. Keep the Zego Sense app running in the background (as required with a Zego Sense policy)

If your vehicle doesn’t have Bluetooth, or you’re having any issues connecting, please let us know – we’ll be happy to help.

Can I mark a trip as a ‘Passenger Trip’ in the Zego Sense app?

Yes – you can now mark any passenger trips yourself, straight from the app.

Just tap the profile icon (top left), then head to ‘Passenger trips’ under ‘Optimisation’. From there, you can add the time you’ll be – or were – a passenger.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

• You can only mark trips from the past seven days.

• Anything older than that, we’re not able to remove.
