Why am I being charged extra?

When you make a change partway through your policy, we have to recalculate the cost of your insurance. Several factors can affect your premium (the amount you pay for insurance). Here’s why:

  1. Vehicle type and value: Different cars come with different levels of risk and cost to insure. For example, if your new car is more expensive, more powerful, or has higher repair costs than your previous one, your insurance premium may go up.

  2. Safety features and claims history: Some vehicles are safer or more likely to be involved in accidents or theft than others. Cars with advanced safety features (like automatic emergency braking or anti-theft systems) could help lower your premium, but if your new vehicle doesn't have these, or if it’s seen as higher-risk, the premium could increase.

  3. Repair and replacement costs: Some vehicles are more expensive to repair or replace than others. If your new car is more costly to fix or buy spare parts for, we may raise the premium to cover these higher potential costs.

  4. Changes in the market: Insurance premiums can also change due to broader factors, like rising repair costs, changes in claims data, or inflation. These factors can impact the cost of insurance, even if the vehicle itself doesn’t directly change your risk.

In short, it’s a combination of your vehicle’s value, risk, and repair costs, along with other factors like market conditions, that determines your premium.

In addition to this, we charge an administration fee of £25 to change your vehicle. This covers our costs for making the change. This applies for all vehicle changes, whether you are changing it using a Zego app, or if you contact us. Find out more about our fees and charges here.

Whilst your price may have gone up, we do our best to make sure our premiums stay as low as possible for our customers and remain in line with the market.

Can you lower the cost?

If the information you’ve given us is correct, rest assured that the quote we’ve given you is our absolute best price. We won’t be able to lower it any further.

How long will my refund take?

If you've made a change to your policy and you are expecting a refund, it usually take around 2 to 3 working days for the refund to be processed and appear back on your payment card.

In exceptional cases, this can take up to 10 days.

If you haven't received your refund after 10 days, just get in touch and we'll look into it for you.
