Understanding our car insurance tiers: Essential, Core, Electric and Max

Zego's personal car insurance comes in four tiers — Essential, Core, Electric, and Max. So you can choose the level of cover that suits your needs and budget. This article explains what's included in each tier and how they differ.

What's included in every tier

No matter which tier you choose, all policies include:

  • Loss, theft and damage — your vehicle is covered at market value for accidents, theft, vandalism, or fire

  • Damage to others — unlimited cover for injury or death; up to £20 million for property damage

  • Key and lock replacement — up to £1,000 for stolen or lost keys, fobs, locks, or immobilisers

  • Personal accident cover — for you and your partner (payout amount varies by tier)

  • Uninsured driver promise — if you're hit by an uninsured driver, you won't lose your no-claims discount and you won't pay an excess

  • Vandalism promise — if vandalism is confirmed with a crime reference number, no excess and no NCD loss applies

  • Charging cable cover

  • Zego Sense telematics (see below)

  • New replacement vehicle (subject to eligibility criteria)

What each tier is best for

Essential

Best for: customers looking for the most affordable option who don't need glass cover, a courtesy car, or EU travel.

Essential gives you all the core protection — theft, accident, fire, vandalism — with a lower monthly cost. Bear in mind it has the highest compulsory excess (£400) and doesn't include windscreen cover, a courtesy vehicle, or EU travel cover.

Core

Best for: most drivers who want solid, well-rounded cover.

Core is Zego's standard product, now positioned as the mid-tier. It builds on Essential by adding windscreen and glass cover, a courtesy vehicle while your car is being repaired, cover for personal belongings, and EU travel cover for up to 90 days. The compulsory excess is £250.

Electric

Best for: electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid drivers who want Core-level cover with added EV-specific protection.

Electric includes everything in Core, plus:

  • Charging cable damage in accidents

  • Battery cover (whether owned or leased)

  • Access to the EV Benefits Platform as an optional add-on

The compulsory excess is £250.

Max

Best for: drivers who want the most comprehensive cover, with legal expenses and breakdown included as standard.

Max builds on Core and adds motor legal expenses (up to £100,000) and roadside and recovery breakdown cover — both included in the price, no add-on needed. It also has the lowest compulsory excess (£150) and the highest personal accident payout (up to £7,500).

Note: Essential, Core, and Max are all available for EV and plug-in hybrid customers. Electric is an additional option specifically for EV owners who want Core cover plus EV-specific perks.

About Zego Sense telematics

All Zego PCI policies are telematics policies. This means you must keep the Zego Sense app active throughout your period of cover.

What Sense tracks:
Speed, braking, cornering, phone use, and the time, place, and frequency of your journeys.

How it affects your policy:

  • Renewal pricing — your driving score influences your renewal price. Safer driving means a lower price; higher-risk driving means a higher price.

  • Policy risk — consistently dangerous driving (such as harsh braking, speeding, or phone use) can result in a 10-day improvement period and, if not addressed, potential cancellation.

  • Rewards — a good driver rating can unlock Zego Rewards.

If you're unable or unwilling to use the Sense app, this product is not suitable for you.

Optional add-ons

The following can be added to most tiers (check your tier above):

  • Motor legal expenses — covers legal costs up to £100,000 if you need to pursue or defend a claim

  • Breakdown cover — roadside assistance and recovery

  • EV Benefits Platform — available on Electric tier only; gives access to EV-specific perks and benefits

Things to know before you buy

No-claims discount (NCD): You'll need to provide valid NCD proof within 7 days of your policy start date. NCD must be in your name, from a UK policy that ended within the last 2 years.

Making changes: Any changes to your vehicle, additional drivers, modifications, or change of use must be agreed with Zego before the new situation is covered.

Making a claim: Our claims team is available 24/7. Do not admit fault at the scene. For theft or vandalism, obtain a crime reference number. Please be aware that Sense data may be used as part of any claims investigation.
